At RCCM we believe a county-wide collaboration to eliminate instability is critical for the following reasons:

  • 26% of our future is growing up in poverty
  • 8,800 in poverty in Roane County and many more are above the poverty level but struggle in instability
  • 100% of the needs in the Roane County United Way needs assessment relate to poverty
  • Symptoms of a low functioning community (drug user rates, low employment and employability, professionals commute to work here)
  • Research documents there is a growing crisis in the lives of children due to the opportunity gap between those in poverty and the rest of society
  • This is becoming much worse with each generation (“Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis” by Robert Putnam)
